What you get

What shelf and floating stand installation includes

A floating console looks weightless — which means everything holding it up has to be hidden and strong.

Shelves and wall-hung consoles

Single or double floating shelves, glass device shelves and full floating media consoles up to the manufacturer's rating.

Anchored into structure

Brackets and French cleats go into studs or masonry; long consoles span several studs for an even load.

Cables drop from the TV into the console or behind the shelf, through grommets — nothing hangs on the wall.

Why a floating shelf or wall-hung console

Once the TV is on the wall, the old TV stand usually looks out of place — a big piece of furniture holding nothing but a soundbar and a streaming box. A floating shelf or wall-hung media console gives those devices a home right under the screen, keeps the floor clear (robot vacuums love it), and makes the TV, soundbar and storage read as one design.

Our TV shelf and floating stand installation covers everything from a single glass device shelf to a full-width floating media console, anchored and aligned with the TV.

Choosing between a shelf and a console

  • Floating shelf — a single board or glass shelf, for a soundbar and one or two small devices. Minimal and inexpensive.
  • Double shelf — two tiers, common for a cable box plus a console.
  • Wall-hung media console — a cabinet with doors or drawers, hiding devices and cables completely. The most finished look and the heaviest to hang.

Planning several TVs joined into one big screen instead of a single TV? That's a media wall — a video wall with its own mounts and sync controller.

Anchoring something that looks weightless

The whole point of a floating console is that you can't see what holds it. That means the hidden hardware does all the work, including the leverage from anything heavy placed at the front edge. We mount wall-hung consoles on a full-length French cleat or the manufacturer's rail, anchored into every stud along its width — or into solid masonry — and check the level again once it's loaded.

Drywall anchors alone aren't used for anything carrying devices. On metal studs, we use rated toggles across several studs; on concrete, sleeve anchors along the cleat.

Getting the spacing right with a soundbar

The console, the soundbar and the TV need to be planned together. A typical layout: the soundbar sits on the console or is mounted just below the TV, with the console top 8–12 inches below the screen. Too close, and the TV's lower edge crowds the bar; too far, and the pieces look disconnected. The soundbar placement calculator works out the gaps, and our article on soundbars and floating shelves shows real setups. We install the soundbar and a game console on the same visit.

Cables through the console

A floating console is the perfect cable hide. The TV's cables run inside the wall from a recessed plate behind the screen down to a plate behind the console, and the devices inside connect to it through a grommet in the back panel. Nothing is visible on the wall between the TV and the console. See TV cable concealment.

How it works

How we install a floating TV stand

  1. Step 1

    Plan the layout

We confirm the shelf or console size, the TV size and the soundbar, and set the height so everything fits.

  2. Step 2

    Find the structure

Studs or solid masonry are located along the full width, and the cleat or brackets are marked to hit them.

  3. Step 3

    Mount the cleat or brackets

The mounting hardware is leveled and anchored; heavy consoles get a full-length French cleat.

  4. Step 4

    Hang and level the unit

The shelf or console is hung, leveled, secured to the cleat and centered under the TV.

  5. Step 5

    Route cables and load it

Cables drop into the unit through grommets, devices go in, and we recheck level with the weight on it.

TV Shelf & Floating Stand Installation: frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install a floating TV shelf or console?
$79–$149 depending on the size: a single floating shelf is at the lower end, a full wall-hung media console at the upper end. Assembly of flat-packed units is included.
How much weight can a floating console hold?
As much as its hardware is rated for — typically 50–130 lb for wall-hung media consoles — provided it's anchored into studs or masonry. We check the rating against what you plan to put on it.
How high should the shelf be under the TV?
High enough to leave room for a soundbar between the shelf and the TV, low enough to look connected to it. We usually set the top of the console 8–12 inches below the TV's bottom edge. The soundbar calculator helps with the spacing.
Can you hide the TV wires through the console?
Yes — that's one of the main reasons to have one. Cables run in the wall from behind the TV and come out behind the console, or drop into it through grommets.
Can a floating stand go on brick or concrete?
Yes, with masonry anchors along the cleat. See drilling brick and stone for how we handle it.
