Why choose a pull-down mantel mount
The wall above a fireplace is where most people want the TV, and it's almost always too high. A mantel at 54 inches pushes the center of a 65-inch screen to 75 inches or more — well above the 42 inches that's comfortable from a sofa. A tilting mount helps, but it only changes the angle, not the height.
A pull-down mantel mount fixes the height itself. When the TV is off, it sits flush and high above the mantel, out of the way. When you sit down to watch, you pull it down by the handles and it glides down and forward to eye level. It's the difference between a TV you tolerate above the fireplace and one you actually enjoy watching there.
Mantel mount installation vs. fireplace TV installation
These are two different services on our site, and people mix them up:
- Fireplace TV installation is mounting a TV above the fireplace on a fixed or tilting bracket. The TV stays where it's mounted. Simpler, faster and cheaper.
- Mantel mount installation is assembling and installing a pull-down arm. The TV moves through a range of 2–3 feet, the mechanism is spring-loaded, and the installation is more precise.
Both start with the same checks — heat above the firebox and what the wall is made of — so if you're unsure which you need, book either one and the technician will talk it through with you on site.
Assembly and tuning: the part that matters most
Pull-down mounts arrive as a box of parts: a wall plate, a pivoting arm with a gas spring or tension spring, TV brackets and handles. The quality of the result depends on how carefully it's put together.
The key setting is tension. Set too light, the TV drifts down on its own; too heavy, it springs up or is hard to pull. We weigh the TV (or confirm its weight with the stand removed), set the tension to match, then check that the TV stays exactly where you leave it anywhere in its range.
Next come the stops. The lowest position has to clear the mantel, anything on it and the hearth below. Side stops keep the TV centered. On mounts with heat-sensing handles, we check the handles are in the right place and working.

Anchoring a moving mount
A fixed bracket just holds weight straight down. A pull-down mount adds leverage: when the TV is pulled forward, the top of the wall plate is pulled out from the wall. That's why the anchoring has to be better than for an ordinary TV.
- On wood framing, the plate goes into two studs with lag bolts of the length and diameter the manufacturer specifies.
- On brick and block, we use sleeve or wedge anchors set deep into the solid material, with the hole spacing the plate requires.
- On natural stone, we shim the plate so it bears evenly — a rocking plate on a moving mount loosens over time.
- Stone veneer and cement board alone won't hold a pull-down mount. We anchor through to the structure behind, or tell you honestly that the wall needs a different solution.

Cables for a TV that moves
A TV that travels two or three feet can't have its cables pulled tight. We route power and HDMI with a service loop — enough slack for the full range, secured so it doesn't hang visibly when the TV is up. Where the wall allows, the cables run inside the wall to a recessed box behind the mount; on solid masonry we use a painted raceway. See the options on TV cable concealment.
Choosing a mantel mount
If you haven't bought the mount yet, check three things: the weight range (your TV must be inside it, not at the very edge), the maximum screen size, and the drop distance — how far down it travels, measured against your mantel height. Heat-sensing handles are a nice extra over wood-burning fireplaces.
We install MantelMount, Echogear, Mount-It, Vivo and other pull-down brands. Our in-depth reads on pull-down TV mount installation and on MantelMount installs in Dallas show real projects, and the fireplace calculator helps you work out the height before you order.
