Most TVs we are called to fix are not falling — they are too high. Hung "out of the way" above a dresser or halfway up the wall, they force people to tilt their heads back every night. The rule is simple: your eyes should land near the middle of the screen when you sit where you watch.

The quick numbers

  • Living room sofa: center of the screen at 40–44 inches from the floor (42 is our default).
  • Bedroom, sitting up in bed: center at 42–50 inches, higher if the bed is tall.
  • Kitchen or standing areas: center at 60–65 inches.
  • Above a fireplace: the mantel decides; aim to keep the viewing angle under 15 degrees or use a pull-down mount.

The TV height calculator does this for your seat height and distance.

Bottom-edge height by TV size (centered at 42 in)

A 16:9 screen is about 0.49 times its diagonal in height. For a center at 42 inches, the bottom edge sits at:

TV sizeScreen heightBottom edge from floor
43 in21 in31–32 in
50 in24.5 in30 in
55 in27 in28.5 in
65 in32 in26 in
75 in37 in23.5 in
85 in41.5 in21 in

Big screens end up surprisingly low — that is correct. The bigger the TV, the more of it sits below eye level.

Room by room

Living room. Measure your eye height seated on your own sofa — deep, low sofas can put it at 36 inches, firm ones at 44. Set the center there.

Bedroom. You usually watch leaning back, so the line of sight goes up. Center at 45–50 inches and angle the screen down 5–10 degrees on a tilting mount.

Media room with risers. Set the height for the main row, then check the back row can see over heads.

Outdoor patio. Seating is lower and people sit farther back; a slightly higher center (48–52 inches) with a downward tilt works.

The fireplace problem

A mantel at 54 inches pushes the TV's center to 70+ inches. That is a lot of neck tilt. The options: a tilting mount angled down, a pull-down mount that lowers the screen when you watch, or putting the TV on another wall. TV over a fireplace covers heat and angles, and the fireplace planner calculates both.

Tip

Before drilling, tape a paper template the size of the TV on the wall and sit with it for an evening. It is the cheapest way to settle an argument about height.

Frequently asked questions

How high should a TV be mounted?
For a living-room sofa, put the center of the screen about 42 inches from the floor — roughly your seated eye height. For a bed, 42–50 inches depending on how high you sit.
How high should the bottom of a 65-inch TV be?
About 26 inches off the floor if you center it at 42 inches. A 65-inch screen is roughly 32 inches tall, so half of that sits below center.
Is it OK to mount a TV above a fireplace?
It works when the wall stays cool enough and the angle is manageable — usually with a tilting or pull-down mount. Our fireplace guide covers the heat check.
