TV mounting height calculator

Floor-to-centre height for your screen and your seat, where the top and bottom edges land, how far you look up, and whether you need a tilt mount.

Centre of the screen at seated eye level: about 42" for a sofa, 42–50" in a bedroom.

How big is the TV?

Screen size is the diagonal, corner to corner — not the width of the TV.

How far away do you sit?
ft

Measure to the front of the sofa, where your head actually is.

What is below the TV?

Measure to the top surface. We leave 6" between it and the bottom of the screen.Measure to the top of the mantel shelf. We add 12" of clearance above it for heat.

Where do you sit?

These are averages. For an exact number, sit down and have someone measure from the floor to your eyes.

The rule is simple: the centre of the screen at the eye level of the person watching. On an average sofa that is about 42" from the floor. Everything else — the size of the screen, a console below, a mantel — only moves the edges or forces the centre up, and every inch up is an inch you look up for the whole film.

TV height by size

With the centre at 42" (sofa seating), this is where the edges land.

Why eye level, and why tilt helps

Looking slightly down is natural; looking up strains the neck within an hour. Up to about 15° of look-up is comfortable, 15–30° is noticeable over a long film, and beyond 30° it is simply too high.

When the TV has to hang higher — over furniture or a mantel — a tilting mount turns the screen back towards you, which recovers picture quality and most of the comfort. A pull-down mount goes further and brings the whole screen down to eye level when you watch.

Frequently asked questions

How high should a TV be mounted from the floor?
Put the centre of the screen at seated eye level: about 42" from the floor for a typical sofa. For a 65" TV that puts the bottom edge near 26" and the top near 58". Measure your own eye height if your seating is unusually low or high.
How high should a TV be in a bedroom?
Higher than in a living room: centre 42–50" from the floor, because you sit up against a headboard or lie back. If you mostly watch lying down, go to the top of the range and use a tilting mount so the screen faces you.
Is it bad to mount a TV too high?
Yes. Every degree you look up adds neck strain over a long film, and LCD panels lose contrast and colour when viewed from below. Up to 15° is fine; past 30° it is too high to watch comfortably without a pull-down mount.
Does TV size change the mounting height?
Not the centre — that is set by your eyes. A bigger screen extends further up and down from the same centre, so check the bottom edge still clears furniture and the top edge is not near the ceiling.
How high above a console should the TV be?
Leave about 6" between the top of the console and the bottom of the screen: enough for a soundbar and so the TV does not look like it is sitting on the furniture. If that forces the centre well above eye level, a tilting mount recovers the angle.
