The short answer: the TV size isn't really limited by the wall — it's limited by what's inside the wall and how you anchor to it. The longer answer depends on three things: structure, space, and seating distance.
1. What the wall can hold

The mount's own rating matters as much: at least 25% above the TV's weight, with the right VESA. Check your model in the VESA finder.
2. What looks right on the wall
A TV that fills a wall edge to edge looks like a mistake. Rule of thumb: leave 6–12 inches of wall around the screen. For reference:

Tape the outline on the wall before you buy — it settles more arguments than any calculator.
3. What fits the seating distance
For 4K, sit about 1 to 1.5 times the diagonal away: a 65-inch TV at 5.5–8 feet, 85-inch at 7–11 feet. The TV size calculator does it for your room, and the height calculator places it.
Big screens: extra checks
- 85 inches and up: VESA 600×400 or 800×400/600, heavy-duty mount, two people. Best mounts for 85-inch TVs.
- Metal studs: add a backer above 85 inches.
- Elevators and doorways: measure the box before buying a 98-inch TV.
