An 85-inch TV is where "any mount from the hardware store" stops being true. The panel is 74 inches wide, 42 inches tall and 75–110 pounds, and every one of those numbers changes the mount you need.
Specs that matter at 85 inches
| Spec | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Weight rating | 125 lb or more (25% above the TV without stand) |
| VESA | 600×400 is common; some models need 800×400 |
| Wall plate width | Reaches two studs: 16 in apart, ideally 24 in |
| Arms (full-motion) | Dual arm, never single |
| Safety | UL 2442 listing, locking hooks |
Look up your exact pattern by model in the VESA finder — Samsung, LG, Sony, TCL and Hisense all use different patterns across the same size.
Which mount type
Fixed. The strongest and slimmest. For an 85-inch TV centered on the sofa, this is what we install most. Distance from wall: about 1.5 inches.
Tilting. For bedrooms and above consoles. Big screens reflect windows more, so a few degrees of tilt earns its keep.
Full-motion. Possible, but only as a heavy-duty dual-arm rated over 150 lb. An 85-inch TV extended 20 inches from the wall is a serious lever; we anchor it with six fasteners across two studs or six masonry sleeve anchors.
Pull-down. Over a tall mantel, check the mount's maximum screen width — many top out at 80 inches. See pull-down mounts.
The wall decides the hardware
- Wood studs: 5/16-inch lag bolts, 2.5–3 inches into the stud, two studs minimum.
- Concrete or block: sleeve or wedge anchors, never plastic plugs. See mounting on concrete.
- Metal studs: heavy snap-toggles through two studs, and on full-motion a backer plate. See metal studs.
- Plaster and lath: find the studs behind the lath first — our method.
An 85-inch TV's center should sit around 42–48 inches off the floor for a sofa. Check yours with the height calculator before drilling.
What we see go wrong
- A mount "for 42–85 inches" that tops out at VESA 600×400 when the TV is 800×400.
- Lag bolts into one stud and a toggle in drywall on the other side.
- A single-arm full-motion mount that sags within a month.
