VESA is the hole pattern on the back of your TV. It is the first thing a mount has to match — before weight, before tilt, before price. Get it right and any decent mount fits; get it wrong and the brackets don't line up.

How to read it

"VESA 400×300" means 400 mm between the holes horizontally and 300 mm vertically. A mount that lists "up to 600×400" supports every pattern with a width up to 600 and height up to 400 — including 400×300. The mount's range is what matters.

These are averages across the major brands; your model can differ. Our VESA mount finder looks up the exact pattern by model number, and the VESA index lists patterns by TV.

How to check your TV

  1. Look it up by model number (on the label on the back) in the manual, the maker's spec sheet or our TV mounts by model database.
  2. Measure center to center between the holes, horizontally and vertically, in millimeters.
  3. Check the screw size — try an M6 by hand; if it's loose, it is M8.

Screws and spacers

Mount kits include M4, M6 and M8 screws in several lengths plus spacers. Use the shortest screw that threads in five or six full turns. On curved backs or recessed inserts, spacers keep the bracket flat. A screw that bottoms out can crack the panel — stop at the first resistance.

Beyond VESA: weight and stud spacing

VESA is necessary but not enough. The mount's weight rating should be at least 25% above the TV's weight, and on a wood wall the plate must reach two studs. Best TV wall mounts lists picks that cover the common patterns.

Frequently asked questions

What does VESA 400x300 mean?
The four mounting holes on the back of the TV are 400 mm apart horizontally and 300 mm apart vertically. The mount must list that pattern (or a range that includes it).
What screws fit the back of a TV?
Most TVs 32–55 inches use M6 screws; most 60 inches and up use M8. Some small TVs use M4. The length depends on how deep the inserts are — never force a screw.
Do all 65-inch TVs have the same VESA pattern?
No. 400×300 is the most common, but some 65-inch models use 300×300 or 400×400. Always check your exact model.
