A new TV on an old mount saves money and a few holes. It works more often than people expect — and fails in predictable ways. We checked the published specs of current models from the major brands against their predecessors; here is what to look for.
The pattern
Same size, newer model: in most lines the VESA pattern stays the same year to year — a 2024 65-inch and its 2026 successor usually share 400×300. One size up: the pattern often changes (55-inch 300×200 to 65-inch 400×300, 65-inch to 75-inch 400×400). Look up both models in our VESA mount finder or TV mounts by model.
Four checks before you reuse a mount
- VESA in range. The new pattern must fit inside the mount's maximum width and height (and above its minimum).
- Weight with margin. The new TV (without stand) should be at least 25% under the mount's rating. Big-screen upgrades are heavier than people expect — an 85-inch is 75–105 pounds.
- Width and position. A wider screen may now overlap a light switch, a window trim or the corner of the wall. Measure the new width against the wall.
- Depth and ports. Slim mounts plus thicker TVs (or rear ports that stick out) can mean the plug hits the wall. Right-angle plugs fix most of this.
When to replace the mount anyway
- The mount is a fixed mount and the new TV will be higher (above a fireplace, in a bedroom) — you want tilt.
- The old mount was installed into furring strips or drywall anchors. Replace the fasteners even if the mount stays.
- The arm of a full-motion mount sags or wobbles.
