How to Hide HDMI and Power Cables Behind a Mounted TV

Three methods that actually work — in-wall kit, paintable raceway, furniture routing — plus the HDMI details people miss: in-wall ratings, length, eARC for soundbars and 2.1 for consoles.

Mounting the TV is half the look. The other half is what hangs below it. There are three good ways to make HDMI and power disappear, and a few cable details that save you from taking the TV down later.

Method 1: In-wall kit (framed walls)

The cleanest result. A UL-listed power relocation kit puts a recessed outlet behind the TV and another near the floor; HDMI runs through a brush plate next to them. Requires a hollow framed wall and, in condos, association approval. Step by step in hiding TV wires in the wall.

Method 2: Paintable raceway (any wall)

A slim channel painted to the wall, straight down from the TV. The go-to on concrete, block and brick, and in rentals. See the raceway guide.

Method 3: Let the furniture hide it

A console or floating shelf directly under the TV makes the visible cable run only a few inches long — and gives the streaming box and soundbar a home. Soundbar and floating shelf installs show the setup.

HDMI details people miss

  • In-wall rating. Cables inside a wall must be marked CL2 or CL3. Regular HDMI is not rated.
  • Length. Buy the shortest cable that reaches. Long HDMI runs (over 25 feet) need active or fiber cables.
  • eARC for soundbars. Connect the soundbar to the TV's HDMI port labeled eARC/ARC, so one remote controls volume.
  • HDMI 2.1 for consoles. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X need Ultra High Speed cables for 4K at 120 Hz.
  • Label both ends before they disappear into the wall.

Power details

  • Use the TV's own cord into a recessed outlet or down a raceway — never an extension cord inside the wall.
  • A right-angle plug lets the TV sit closer to the wall on slim mounts.
  • Put the surge protector at the outlet end.

Frequently asked questions

What HDMI cable should I use behind a wall-mounted TV?
A short, certified High Speed or Ultra High Speed cable. If it goes inside the wall, it must be CL2 or CL3 rated. For consoles running 4K at 120 Hz, use Ultra High Speed (HDMI 2.1).
Where should the streaming box go on a mounted TV?
Stick-style streamers plug straight into the TV. Boxes can mount behind the TV with a small bracket, or sit on a floating shelf below with a short HDMI up through the raceway or wall.
Do I need a surge protector for a wall-mounted TV?
Yes, especially in Florida's lightning season. Put it at the outlet end, behind furniture, not behind the TV.
