What this means for your TV wall

A median year built of 2013, with 66.0% of homes finished since 2010, means a New Hill TV wall is nearly always fresh drywall on wood studs. With 93.4% detached houses, there is rarely a shared wall to respect, and the planning centers on two-story family rooms, bonus rooms over the garage and gas fireplaces. Older farm homes are a small minority, but they are the visits where we bring test bits and a dust shroud.

Inside a new New Hill build: framing, fire blocks, builder boxes

Most calls from Friendship, Olive Ridge, Ashland and Belterra come within a year of closing. Those walls are wood-stud drywall, but a new frame can still surprise. Tymofii scans the whole wall before drilling, because a room framed 24 inches on center changes which mount plate can reach two studs. In two-story family rooms, about 1 in 4 cable runs meet a horizontal fire block inside the stud bay, and we drill through it cleanly. Over gas fireplaces the builder often parks the outlet near the ceiling, so we run a 20-minute burn and read the surface where the TV will sit, then settle the height with our height tool. The cord itself never goes in the wall: a listed in-wall power kit carries power from the outlet below. A 65- to 85-inch screen is $129, and a tilting mount is $49.

Porches, lake decks and farmhouses beyond the subdivisions

Not every address here sits on a cul-de-sac. Houses on acreage along New Hill Road and wooded lots toward Harris Lake, the 4,100-acre reservoir formed by damming Buckhorn Creek, often come with a screened porch or a deck aimed at the water. Triangle mornings in August and September average 92 percent relative humidity, so a porch gets an outdoor-rated set, a sealed cable entry and a drip loop, with the screen at least 3 feet in from the open side. Near the old crossroads, the National Register district holds more than 60 buildings, among them farms, curing barns and pack houses from the tobacco years. In those older homes we expect plaster, old paint and the odd two-prong outlet, and plan the visit around them. See our outdoor TV work or send a request with a wall photo.

Retreat at Friendship family room

  • 75-inch
  • stacked stone over a gas fireplace

The builder's outlet sat about 14 feet up. After the burn, Tymofii and a second technician hung it a foot lower, into framing behind the stone.

Belterra bonus room

  • 65-inch
  • drywall on wood studs, 24 inches on center
  • tilting

Studs ran 24 inches apart, so a wider plate caught two, and the cables went through the knee-wall attic on an early slot.

TV mounting in New Hill, NC: common questions

Do you come to New Hill with no travel fee?
Yes. New Hill is inside our Cary service area and costs the same as Apex and Cary.
Can you mount TVs in my new New Hill home?
Yes — family room, bonus room and bedrooms in one visit, into studs, with the cables hidden.
How much does TV mounting cost in New Hill?
$119 up to 60 inches, $129 up to 85 inches and $69 to hide the cables inside the wall.
Can you put a TV on my covered porch?
Yes, an outdoor-rated TV with stainless hardware and a sealed cable entry, planned around your HOA's exterior rules.
How soon can you come to New Hill?
Usually the same day or the next, seven days a week.
Can you mount a TV over the fireplace in my New Hill great room?
Usually yes. We check the heat above the firebox and the viewing height, then use a tilting mount — or a pull-down mount when the natural spot is too high to watch comfortably.
Can the TV sit lower than the builder's high outlet?
Usually, yes. Many owners end up a foot or more below the builder's box, on a tilting mount, after our heat test. Our recessed in-wall kit plugs into the existing outlet below; any new outlet is a licensed electrician's job.
Will an indoor TV hold up on a porch facing Harris Lake?
We advise against it. Triangle summers are humid and July brings the most thunderstorm days. Before mounting, we suggest an outdoor-rated set, a sealed cable entry and a surge protector, which cope far better under a porch roof.
Is the bonus room over my garage too warm for a TV?
Not for the TV, though about half the bonus rooms we work in here run warmer on summer afternoons. We book attic cable runs for mornings and use a tilting mount on a short knee wall.
