Historic houses and new neighborhoods

Historic district houses have old plaster, sometimes over brick or board. We find what is behind it before drilling, go slowly and patch every test hole. Studs behind plaster.

Waterstone and Cornwallis Hills homes are drywall on wood studs. Lag bolts into two studs, cables inside the wall ($69). Hiding cables.

A TV that respects an old room

Many historic-house owners choose a Samsung Frame and a raceway painted the wall color, so the room keeps its character. Frame TVs, mounts for plaster.

Old fireplaces

Old fireplaces and mantels get a close look before anything goes above them — heat, height and what the chimney breast is made of. TVs over fireplaces.

What this means for your TV wall

Hillsborough's housing splits sharply by age: 40.2% of homes went up in 2010 or later, while 20.5% predate 1960. In practice that means a Collins Ridge family room with drywall on wood studs one morning and a plastered parlor near Churton Street the next, so we carry tools for both. With 47.1% of homes heated mainly by utility gas, most newer fireplaces we see are gas units, while the older core still keeps working wood fireboxes.

Old core or new edge: what your Hillsborough wall hides

Walk from Churton Street out toward US 70 and the walls change. Inside the historic district and West Hillsborough, a neighborhood studied for a conservation district, we usually meet plaster over wood lath or brick. Plaster here is often original and thick, so we drill slowly, patch as we go, and in pre-1978 houses keep a dust shroud on the drill without sanding painted trim. Out in Collins Ridge, Waterstone and the other newer streets, the builders hung drywall on wood studs, and we sometimes find framing at 24-inch centers rather than 16.

Planning a 65- or 75-inch screen? Most of those land in our $129 bracket, and our height tool helps you pick the center line before Danylo arrives. Text us a photo of the wall from your phone and we will tell you what to expect.

Wood fires and porch screens near Churton Street

Hillsborough is one of the few towns in our circle where we still mount over fireplaces that burn real wood. Danylo builds an actual fire for the 20-minute heat test and reads the surface where the TV's bottom edge will sit; a hot reading moves the screen higher on a tilt or beside the chimney. More on our fireplace installs.

Porches raise the other local question. In the historic district, the town can count even lighting and signs as exterior changes, so a porch TV, a new cable hole through siding or exposed conduit generally needs a Certificate of Appropriateness or minor-work approval first. The town suggests meeting planning staff four to six weeks before the submittal deadline. We plan the outdoor TV with you, then mount once approval arrives. Its power cord never runs inside a wall.

West Hillsborough cottage

  • 55-inch
  • plaster over wood lath

The lath crumbled at the first test hole, so Danylo moved the plate onto two studs and ran paintable raceway.

Collins Ridge new build

  • 75-inch
  • drywall on 24-inch-center studs

TV mounting in Hillsborough, NC: common questions

Can you mount a TV in a historic Hillsborough house?
Yes. We find out what is behind the plaster before drilling, go slowly so nothing cracks, and patch every test hole before we leave.
Do I need approval from the historic district?
Not for anything inside the house. Exterior changes — like a porch TV visible from the street — are worth checking first.
How much does TV mounting cost in Hillsborough?
$119 up to 60 inches, $129 up to 85 inches and $39 for a painted cable raceway. No travel fee.
Can you mount TVs in my Waterstone home?
Yes — into studs, with the cables run inside the wall to a recessed box behind the TV.
How soon can you come to Hillsborough?
Usually the same day or the next — our Durham crew is twenty minutes away.
Will mounting a TV in Collins Ridge affect my builder warranty?
Yes. We mount into studs with lag bolts and leave wiring, plumbing and framing alone. If your warranty booklet mentions wall attachments, send us that page. Some new Hillsborough walls run at 24-inch centers, so we check spacing first.
Can a TV go above my wood-burning fireplace?
Often, yes, after a heat test with a real wood fire rather than a quick reading. Danylo checks the surface where the TV will sit, finds the brick behind any plaster and warns you that ash can collect in the TV's vents.
Does my Waterstone or Collins Ridge HOA need to approve an indoor TV?
Usually not for a TV inside the house; HOA rules mostly govern exteriors. A porch or patio TV visible from the street is different, so check your covenants first. For indoor work, send a request and we can often come the same day.
