How to Choose a TV Mounting Service: What Separates a Pro From a Handyman

A practical checklist for hiring a TV installer: flat price vs hourly, what's included, insurance and COIs, wall experience, the mount question, cable concealment, warranty and the red flags we see every week.

How to Choose a TV Mounting Service: What Separates a Pro From a Handyman — TV Mount Q installation

  1. 1. A flat price, in writing, before the visit
  2. 2. What's included
  3. 3. Experience with your wall
  4. 4. Insurance and building paperwork
  5. 5. The mount question
  6. 6. Cable concealment done to code
  7. 7. Reviews that mention the details
  8. Red flags

Anyone with a drill can hang a TV. The difference shows later: a TV that sags after a month, a stud split in half, drywall dust on the sofa, a raceway that peels off in the Miami humidity, or a surprise $75 "concrete fee" at the door. Here's how to pick someone who does it right.

1. A flat price, in writing, before the visit

Hourly quotes look cheaper and rarely are. A good service quotes a flat price by TV size and lists what's extra (mount, cable concealment, soundbar). Our own list is public: how much TV mounting costs.

2. What's included

Should be includedOften "extra" elsewhere
Anchors for your wall typeMasonry / concrete surcharge
Leveling and cable management"Cable tidy-up" fee
Cleanup and dust controlTravel fee
Warranty on the installationCOI paperwork fee

3. Experience with your wall

Ask directly: "How do you mount on concrete block? On metal studs? On plaster?" A pro answers in one sentence with the anchor type. Vague answers ("we have the tools") are a warning. Background: concrete, metal studs, plaster.

4. Insurance and building paperwork

General liability insurance, and a certificate of insurance (COI) sent to your building if needed — standard in Miami condos. An installer who hesitates here can't work in most high-rises.

5. The mount question

A good installer will install your mount or bring one that fits your TV's VESA pattern and weight — and will tell you when your mount is wrong for the job (a single-arm full-motion for an 85-inch TV, a mount without the right VESA range).

6. Cable concealment done to code

In-wall power must use a rated in-wall kit — never an extension cord inside the wall. On concrete, a paintable raceway is the honest option. Hiding wires the right way.

7. Reviews that mention the details

Look for reviews that mention the wall, the building, the size — not just "great job". And check how the company answers the bad ones.

Red flags

  • No price until someone "comes to look"
  • Cash-only, no invoice
  • Plans to drive lag bolts into drywall "because it's fine"
  • An extension cord through the wall
  • No mention of a warranty

Frequently asked questions

Should I hire a handyman or a TV mounting company?
For a small TV on wood studs, a careful handyman is fine. For concrete, metal studs, plaster, big screens, fireplaces or in-wall cables, a company that mounts TVs every day will be faster, cleaner and insured for it.
What should a TV mounting price include?
Labor, anchors for your wall type, leveling, cable management, cleanup and a warranty. Mount, in-wall kit and add-ons are usually separate line items — ask for them up front.
Does a TV installer need insurance?
Yes. General liability insurance covers damage to your home or TV; most condos and HOAs won't let an uninsured installer in.
