Village cottages, Mount Helix view homes and Lake Murray ranches

Village cottages have plaster over wood lath or stucco mesh and irregular stud spacing. We confirm studs with test holes, drill slowly and use a wide mount when needed. Mounts for plaster walls.

Mount Helix and Lake Murray homes have stucco and drywall, big windows toward the view and patios. We plan the TV away from the glass, mount into two studs and strap articulating arms. Studs behind plaster.

Patios with a view

Mount Helix patios look west over the county. Outdoor-rated TVs go under a solid roof, angled out of the sunset glare, with stainless hardware. Outdoor TVs.

Swivel mounts in open living rooms

When the TV has to face the sofa and the view, a full-motion mount ($69) turns it. Tilt vs. swivel.

What this means for your TV wall

Nearly three in four La Mesa homes predate 1980, with 39.7% built between 1960 and 1979, so the median year built lands at 1971. For a TV wall that means pre-1978 paint, which we open without sanding, and a good chance of a brick or slump-stone fireplace in the family room. With 52.3% of households renting, many jobs end with a painted raceway a landlord will approve instead of new holes in the drywall.

Slump stone and brick in the 1960s–70s ranches

We find most La Mesa fireplaces in the ranch streets running north toward Lake Murray and on the lower slopes under Mount Helix. Rough-faced block from that era is hollow and uneven, so Maksym shims the plate until it bears evenly and sets every anchor in the web of the block, never in a mortar joint. When a chimney turns out to be thin stone veneer over framing, we treat the veneer as decoration and find the studs behind it. Before picking a height we run the fireplace and measure the wall above the firebox; about 1 in 10 is too warm for a screen right over the mantel. Mounted higher, a tilting bracket ($49) angles the picture down toward the sofa, so nobody cranes their neck. More on fireplace TV installation and our height tool.

Renting near the Village and on Allison Avenue

Just over half of La Mesa rents, and the rental stock keeps growing: 8181 Allison Avenue adds 147 affordable homes on the old police station site, and more projects are planned near Palm Avenue. In apartment buildings the TV wall is often shared with a neighbor or the corridor, so we skip in-wall boxes and run a slim painted raceway ($39) that leaves only a few small screw holes when you move out. Get the landlord's yes in writing, text us a photo of the wall, and Maksym can tell you whether to expect wood studs or steel track. Owners of landmark-designated houses in the older blocks face a different question: a Mills Act agreement trades tax savings for preserving the structure, so we keep every hole indoors and fix nothing to the historic exterior.

  • 65-inch
  • wood studs + drywall

A fire block stopped the in-wall power kit run; Maksym cut one small extra opening the TV hides.

1960s ranch below Mount Helix

  • 75-inch
  • slump-stone fireplace

The gas logs warmed the block more than expected, so Maksym mounted higher and shimmed the plate.

TV mounting in La Mesa, CA: common questions

Can you mount a TV in a 1920s La Mesa cottage without cracking the plaster?
Yes. We drill slowly and anchor into the studs behind the plaster.
Can you mount a TV on my Mount Helix patio?
Yes, outdoor-rated with stainless hardware under a solid roof.
How much does TV mounting cost in La Mesa?
$119 up to 60 inches, $129 up to 85 inches, no travel fee.
Are your mounts earthquake-safe?
Yes — solid studs, rated hardware and a strap on full-motion arms.
How soon can you come?
Usually the same day or the next, seven days a week from 8am to 8pm.
Can a TV go above the wood-burning fireplace in my 1960s ranch?
Often, yes. We light a fire and measure the wall where the TV would hang. If it runs too warm, the screen goes higher on a tilting mount or beside the chimney. Wood fires also leave ash, so expect more dusting.
I rent near La Mesa Village. What should I have ready?
Written permission from your landlord, the TV's size and a photo of the wall with the nearest outlet. If the building wants a certificate of insurance, give us the manager's email; we usually send it the same day.
Moving from a downtown apartment to a Lake Murray house: can you do both ends?
Yes. Maksym can take the TV down at the apartment, fill the small holes and rehang it at the house on move-in day. About two in three requests sent before noon get a same-day slot, so send both addresses in your request.
