Mill-village houses, downtown apartments and new subdivisions

Mill-village houses have plaster or wood boards under the drywall and framing that isn't always where you expect. We find it with a test hole and anchor to it. Studs behind plaster.

New subdivisions are standard wood studs and drywall with gas fireplaces. Lag bolts into two studs, level and pull-tested. Drywall guide.

Downtown apartments

New apartments near the ballpark are thin walls and shared partitions. We mount into studs and use a removable raceway ($39). Renter-friendly cables.

Fireplaces in new family rooms

We check the heat above the firebox and the viewing height, then choose a fixed ($39) or tilting mount ($49). TVs over fireplaces.

What this means for your TV wall

Kannapolis has two housing stories at once. 29.7% of homes were built before 1960, mostly the old Cannon village, where we expect plaster, wood boards and framing that does not sit on a 16-inch grid. At the same time 24.3% went up since 2010, so plenty of walls are fresh drywall on wood studs. About a third of homes (34.4%) are rented, which is why we often finish cables in paintable raceway instead of opening a wall the owner never approved.

The mill village, street by street

Cannon bought the land in 1905, had the first mill running by 1907, and built hundreds of worker homes along with a YMCA, schools and churches; the place was Cannon City, then Cannapolis, and only incorporated as Kannapolis in 1984. That history decides your TV wall. The bigger houses on Ridge Avenue have more room and sturdier plaster; the smaller cottages deeper in the village have tight living rooms, windows on most walls and a chimney in the middle of the house. Before we drill, we look at where the sofa can really go, then choose the wall, not the other way round.

Downtown living near the campus and the ballpark

When Cannon Mills closed in 2003, David Murdock turned the site into the North Carolina Research Campus, and downtown has filled in since: Stadium Lofts overlooks the Atrium Health Ballpark, and VIDA and 200 Main sit a short walk from the renovated Swanee Theatre. These are newer wood-frame walls, quick work for us, but shared partitions mean we confirm what is behind the drywall before we pick anchors. Townhome owners at Pennant Square get the same care, plus hidden cables when the HOA allows it. Neighbors in Concord book the same crew, and every town we serve is on the Charlotte region page. brick cottage off Ridge Avenue

  • 55-inch
  • plaster over lath
  • tilting

The chimney sat where the TV wanted to go, so we moved it one wall over. Two test holes inside the plate's footprint found the studs, and the cable dropped in painted raceway along the old baseboard.

apartment in the downtown core near the ballpark

  • 65-inch
  • wood studs + drywall
  • full-motion

The renter had written permission for the mount only. We hit two studs, turned the arm toward the window seat and left a removable raceway, so move-out means filling four holes.

two-story in Whispering Winds

  • 75-inch
  • drywall over a gas fireplace
  • fixed

The builder box was nearly at the ceiling. After a burn test we set the screen lower and ran power with a listed in-wall kit, never a loose cord in the cavity.

TV mounting in Kannapolis, NC: common questions

Can you mount a TV in an old Cannon Mills house?
Yes. We find the real framing behind the plaster or boards and anchor to it.
I rent downtown — can I mount a TV?
Usually yes with the landlord's okay; we use studs and a removable raceway.
How much does TV mounting cost in Kannapolis?
$119 up to 60 inches and $129 up to 85 inches, mounts from $39. No travel fee.
Can you mount over my fireplace?
Usually yes, after checking the heat and the height; a tilting mount helps when it sits high.
How soon can you come?
Usually the same day or the next, seven days a week.
What mount works in a small mill-house living room?
Usually a full-motion mount ($69): the TV turns toward the sofa when you watch and folds flat against the wall when you need the space.
Can you hide the cables in an old mill house?
Often yes — we fish them through the stud bay behind the plaster or boards. When the wall won't allow it, a slim painted raceway ($39) is the clean alternative.
My house is one of the old Cannon Mills homes. Will the wall hold a big TV?
Usually yes, once we find real framing. These houses were built fast and by the hundreds, so studs can be off-pattern and covered by boards and plaster. We confirm each one with a small test hole and pick a mount that reaches it. Studs behind plaster.
I rent at Stadium Lofts or another downtown building. What do I need?
Your landlord's okay in writing, and the wall type if you know it. We mount into studs, keep holes few and small, and finish cables in a removable raceway ($39). Renter tips.
Can you do several rooms in one Kannapolis visit?
Yes. Newer subdivision visits are often two or three TVs, and each extra TV is $40. Send screen sizes and a photo of each wall and Ihor plans the order so the day fits one trip.
