How to Mount a TV Above an Electric Fireplace

Electric fireplaces run cool, but the heater vent still needs clearance. How much space to leave, wall-mounted vs recessed vs media-console units, how to power both, and the right TV height.

An electric fireplace is the easy version of "TV over the fireplace." There's no chimney heat and no soot — just a small heater with a vent you must respect, and a power plan for two appliances on one wall.

Check the fireplace manual first

Every unit lists a minimum clearance above it for anything combustible or heat-sensitive. For wall-mounted and recessed electric fireplaces that's usually 8–12 inches. The flame effect alone barely warms the wall; the heater vent is what matters, and most blow forward or down.

Recessed / built-in (in a framed wall)Framing, clearances, access to wiringFixed or tilt; cables inside the build

Getting the height right

Because electric units are often low, the TV can sit lower than above a masonry fireplace — which is good for your neck. Aim for the screen center near 42–48 inches from the floor if you can, and tilt a few degrees if it ends up higher. The fireplace calculator has an "electric" option that uses the smaller clearance.

Power for both

  • A fireplace heater can draw 1,500 W — give it its own outlet.
  • For the TV, an in-wall power kit puts an outlet behind the screen with no visible cords. Hiding TV wires in the wall.
  • On a built-in wall, run a conduit for HDMI while the wall is open — adding it later is much harder.

Mounting steps

  1. Mark the fireplace position and its top clearance line.
  2. Find the studs (or blocking in a built-in wall).
  3. Mount the fireplace first, then measure up for the TV.
  4. Mount the TV plate level, hang the TV, route cables, test the heater for 20 minutes and check the wall under the TV.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put a TV above an electric fireplace?
Yes. Most electric fireplaces blow warm air forward or down, not up, and their heaters top out around 5,000 BTU. Follow the fireplace manual's clearance above the unit, usually 8–12 inches.
How much space between an electric fireplace and a TV?
Usually 8–12 inches from the top of the unit to the bottom of the TV, or whatever the fireplace manual states. With the heater off, the flame effect alone produces almost no heat.
Can the TV and electric fireplace share an outlet?
Better not. A fireplace heater draws up to 1,500 W; put it on its own outlet and run the TV power separately, ideally with an in-wall power kit.
