Gifford Park house built before 1920
Soft lime mortar holds this chimney, so every sleeve anchor went into a brick face, never a joint, after a 20-minute burn.

Elgin means front porches and old brick: over 2,000 bungalows, five historic districts and Victorian parlors east of the Fox, with Providence and Bowes Creek west of Randall Road. Denys and our northwest crew know both halves, quote a flat price up front and can often arrive the same day.
TV mounting in Elgin is flat-rate: $119 up to 60", $129 for 61–85" and from $179 for 86" and larger, plus $40 for each additional TV. Mounts from $39, cables hidden in a raceway for $39 or inside the wall for $69. No travel fee and no surcharge for plaster or brick.
Victorian homes have plaster over wood lath, tall ceilings, pocket doors and irregular stud spacing. We find studs with test holes, drill slowly and use a wide mount when the studs don't match the TV. Mounts for plaster walls.
New builds along Randall Road have drywall on wood studs, family-room fireplaces and full basements. Lag bolts upstairs, masonry anchors on concrete foundation walls downstairs. Concrete walls.
Elgin's Victorian owners often restore their houses themselves. We keep original trim and pocket doors untouched, and recommend a painted raceway ($39) over cutting plaster. Studs behind plaster.
Condos and lofts on the Fox River downtown have brick and concrete walls. Sleeve anchors in solid brick, concrete anchors in concrete, and a COI for the association.
40,523 homes and about 114,934 residents. The age and type of a home decide what is behind the drywall, so we check this before we quote.

U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020–2024 5-year estimates: year built, units in structure, tenure.
Elgin's median home was built in 1977, the oldest of the four largest suburbs we serve, and 30.3% of its housing went up before 1960. That older third brings plaster over wood lath, brick chimney breasts and soft pre-1920 mortar, so test holes come before any bracket. With 61.9% detached houses, most TV visits are with an owner who can settle cable routes and outlets on the spot, no association sign-off needed.
East of the Fox, the TV wall is often a chimney breast or an outside wall with brick a few inches behind the plaster. Elgin's design guidelines warn that houses built before 1920 were laid in soft mortar, and that hard Portland cement patching can crack the brick around it. So we never fill or repoint: anchors go into solid brick faces, found with small test holes inside the plate's footprint, which the plate later hides. On a painted breast we drill with dust collection and never sand. In the city's 2,000-plus bungalows the fireplace wall is usually the only long blank one. Over a gas insert we run a 20-minute full-output burn and read the surface before drilling; too hot, and the TV moves beside the hearth or onto a pull-down. Our fireplace TV service keeps the flat $129 rate for a 65-inch or 75-inch screen.

Elgin wires to the 2020 National Electrical Code with local amendments: NM cable is deleted, "Handy" boxes are banned, and on a remodel MC may run inside an existing wall for 12 feet at most. So a new outlet behind the screen is a licensed electrician's job, while we handle the mount, the low-voltage HDMI and network lines, and a listed in-wall power kit where one fits. The TV's own power cord never goes inside the wall. About half of our 10+ Elgin concealment jobs are in bungalows and Victorians, where we cut a small test opening before promising a recessed box; thick plaster or crumbling lath sends the run into paintable raceway. West of Randall Road, in Providence and Bowes Creek, open drywall bays make an in-wall run quick. See cable concealment, from $69 in the wall.

The family's electrician fished a short MC run, well under Elgin's 12-foot limit, into a proper box; Denys ran the HDMI alongside.

The factory wall has deep, uneven joints, so Denys shimmed the plate plumb and set sleeve anchors in the brick faces.
