Master-planned homes with basements and student apartments

Legacy Park and Brookstone homes have family rooms with a fireplace, bonus rooms over the garage and finished basements. Framed walls get lag bolts into two studs; basement foundation walls get masonry anchors through the furring strips. Concrete walls.

Student apartments near KSU usually forbid opening walls. We mount into the studs with two small holes and use a paintable raceway ($39) — and we'll take the TV down again at move-out ($49). Apartment mounting.

Move-in weekend

August move-in fills our Kennesaw calendar. Parents often book the TV for the day they drop off their student; book a few days ahead for that weekend.

Bonus rooms and back decks

Bonus rooms over the garage can have kneewalls instead of full studs; we confirm the framing first. Back decks get outdoor-rated TVs with stainless hardware under a solid roof. Outdoor TVs.

What this means for your TV wall

With a median year built of 1998 and 44.0% of homes from 1980 to 1999, most Kennesaw TV walls are half-inch drywall on wood studs at 16 inches. The catch sits lower down: many hillside lots have a terrace-level basement whose buried walls are poured concrete or block behind furring. Townhomes make up 16.7% of homes, and their party walls are fire separations, so we usually pick another wall for the TV.

Which wall you will meet, street by street

Kennesaw's subdivisions differ more than the map suggests, and the wall behind your TV usually follows the decade the house was framed.

  • Barrett Knoll (built around 2003) and Barrett Pointe — traditional and ranch-style houses, drywall on wood studs upstairs, often one poured and one framed basement wall. About an hour per TV on studs.
  • Westpark, Reserve at Hickory Walk and Sutters Pond — the city's priciest streets, where the fireplace wall is often stacked-stone veneer over a framed chase. We treat the stone as a finish, not a support, and anchor into the framing behind it.
  • Town Center at Cobb and the I-75/I-575 corner — townhomes and apartments within walking distance of the mall, where shared walls and leases decide between in-wall and raceway.

Game day in a terrace-level basement

Kennesaw's rolling ground below the mountain means many houses step down the hill to a walk-out lower level, and that is where most of our game rooms here end up.

The uphill walls are poured concrete or block hidden behind drywall on furring. On block we set anchors into the web of the hollow block, never the mortar joint, and a foundation-wall visit runs about an hour and a half. The downhill wall is framed around windows and a glass door and fights glare, so we often angle the screen on a full-motion arm.

Acoustic-tile drop ceilings and duct soffits are common down here, and they kill the effect of up-firing Atmos drivers. A bar without them, plus a pair of rear speakers, sounds better in that room. For seating height, try our TV height tool before we arrive.

Can you mount a TV in my basement?
Yes, with masonry anchors on concrete walls or lag bolts on framed walls.
How much does TV mounting cost in Kennesaw?
$119 up to 60 inches, $129 up to 85 inches, no travel fee.

Can you mount a TV over my fireplace?
Usually yes, after checking the heat and the mantel height. TVs over fireplaces.
Does a TV inside a shop in downtown Kennesaw need historic approval?
Inside, usually not: Georgia's historic review covers exterior changes. Kennesaw's local Historic District around Big Shanty, Cherokee, Summers and North Main streets can require design review for a TV or conduit on an outside wall or storefront. Check with city staff first.
Can you hide the wires in a Kennesaw basement media room?
On a framed basement wall, yes: we use a listed in-wall power kit ($69), and the TV's own cord never runs loose inside the wall. Buried concrete walls rarely leave a cavity, so there we use paintable raceway.
When should I book a basement TV and soundbar before football season?
Book in late July. About a third of our basement soundbar visits fall in August and September, right when KSU move-in fills Kennesaw's calendar. With a week's notice we mount the TV, the bar ($69) and rear speakers in one visit.
