Walk into a family room in Frisco, Plano or Southlake and there's a good chance the fireplace wall is stone — floor to ceiling, rough, and nothing like the drywall a TV mount's instructions assume. Stone is one of the best walls to hold a TV. It just takes different work.

What "stone" usually means in DFW

We never trust the veneer alone. Find out what's behind first — a small pilot hole tells us in seconds.

Drilling clean

  • Mark on the stone face, not the grout or mortar joints: joints are weaker and crumble.
  • Sharp carbide bit, steady pressure, hammer mode only once we know it's solid stone.
  • Dust collection at the bit — stone dust on a white carpet is the real mess.

More on the difference between the two: drilling into brick vs stone veneer.

Getting a flat plate on a lumpy wall

Stone faces can vary by an inch across a TV plate. If the plate bolts down onto high points, it twists, and the TV hangs crooked or wobbles. We find the high points, shim the low ones with stacked washers or a spacer block, and check plumb and level before the TV goes up. On very rough stone, a wider fixed plate or a tilt mount with a little depth hides the irregularity.

Cables on stone

In-wall kits aren't possible through solid stone. Options: run cables inside the chase if it's framed, route them down behind the mantel, or use a paintable raceway along the edge of the stone where it meets drywall. The wire concealment planner shows the options for your wall.

Over the fireplace?

Most stone walls in DFW are fireplace walls. Check heat and height first: TV over a fireplace and the fireplace calculator. For tall mantels, a pull-down mount is often the best answer: MantelMount installation in Dallas.

Frequently asked questions

Can you mount a TV on Austin stone?
Yes. Austin stone on most Dallas fireplaces is veneer over a framed or block chase. We anchor through the stone into the structure behind, using long sleeve anchors or lag bolts depending on what we find.
How do you keep the TV level on uneven stone?
We shim the wall plate at the low points with stacked washers or a spacer block so the plate sits flat and plumb, then check level before hanging the TV.
Does mounting on stone cost more?
Not with us. Stone, brick and concrete cost the same as drywall: $119 up to 60 inches, $129 up to 85 inches.
Will drilling damage the stone?
A sharp carbide bit, the right speed and drilling into the stone face rather than the grout lines keep it clean. We capture the dust as we drill.

Solid brick takes Tapcons in the face or the mortar joint, whichever lines up with the mount. Veneer cannot hold a TV on its own: anchor through it into what is behind.
