A ceiling mount is the fix when there's no usable wall: floor-to-ceiling glass, a wall full of windows, a kitchen with cabinets everywhere, a bedroom with a sloped ceiling, a home gym, a waiting room. It's also the one installation where the structure you can't see matters most.
The types
| Type | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed pole | Pole drop with tilt at the head | Kitchens, gyms, bars |
| Tilt + swivel pole | Rotates 360°, tilts ±15° | Open rooms, several seats |
| Dual pole (heavy-duty) | Two poles, wider head | 75 in and larger |
| Motorized flip-down | TV folds flat to the ceiling | Bedrooms, RV-style hidden setups |
Adjustable poles let you set the exact height; measure from the floor to where you want the screen center and subtract from the ceiling height.
What the ceiling has to be
- Wood joists: lag bolts into the joist center, never into the edge. Joists usually run parallel to the shorter wall.
- Concrete slab (condos, high-rises): wedge or sleeve anchors rated for overhead use. Check with the building first — some post-tensioned slabs must not be drilled without a scan, because cutting a tendon is dangerous and expensive.
- Drop ceiling: the grid holds nothing. The mount has to reach through to the structure above.
- Drywall alone: never.
Overhead anchors see a pure pull-out load, the hardest direction for any fastener. Use anchors rated for ceiling use and stay well under the mount's rating.
Heights and angles
For a room where you sit, the screen center still wants to be near eye level plus a comfortable tilt; ceiling mounts usually end up higher than that, so plan 10–15 degrees of downward tilt. In kitchens and gyms, where people stand, higher is fine. Use the height calculator for the seated case.
Cables
The clean route is up the pole and through the ceiling to an outlet or a box above. Where that isn't possible, a short paintable raceway along the ceiling to the wall looks tidy.
Corners and odd rooms
Sometimes a corner full-motion arm solves the same problem with less work: corner and ceiling mount solutions.
