How Do You Mount a TV Without Drilling?

Floor stands, tension poles and furniture-clamp mounts hold a TV safely without holes. Adhesive strips, hooks and suction mounts never do. Options by TV size.

Sometimes drilling is off the table: a strict lease, a brand-new wall, a historic house, or a stone wall you do not want to touch. You still have options — just not the ones that look easiest in the store.

What works

Floor stands with a post

A heavy base, a vertical column and a VESA bracket that holds the TV at the same height as a wall mount. Good ones are rated for 70–100 pounds and 85-inch screens, have an anti-tip strap and hide cables inside the post. From the sofa it reads almost like a wall mount. Our floor-stand picks match stands to TV size and weight.

Console and furniture-clamp mounts

A bracket that sits on the TV console and bolts behind it, lifting the TV above the furniture. Good for smaller TVs when you want the screen higher than the stand allows.

Tension-pole systems

Floor-to-ceiling poles that press between the floor and ceiling. They work with lighter TVs and solid ceilings; not a good idea under drop ceilings or with heavy screens.

What does not work

  • Adhesive strips and hooks. Rated for frames, not a 40-pound object whose weight pulls outward. Humidity makes them worse.
  • Suction mounts. They lose grip over hours, not years.
  • Leaning the TV on a shelf "against the wall." One bump and it falls forward — the most common way TVs injure kids.

Anti-tip straps: the one small hole worth making

If the TV stays on furniture, anchor it. An anti-tip strap needs one tiny screw into the wall or the furniture — far less than a mount, and it prevents the tip-over injuries that send thousands of children to the ER each year.

Is "no-stud" the same as "no-drill"?

No. "No-stud" mounts use hardened pins or small nails through drywall — still holes, just small ones, and only for lighter TVs. When drywall alone is actually safe explains the limits.

If you can drill after all, a proper mount leaves four small holes that patch in minutes — see mounting in an apartment. Our installs start at $119.

Frequently asked questions

Can Command strips hold a TV?
No. Adhesive strips are rated for picture frames. A TV's weight sits away from the wall and pulls outward, and summer humidity in Florida weakens the adhesive further.
What is the best way to put up a TV without drilling?
A floor stand with a vertical post that holds the TV at wall-mount height. It looks close to a wall mount, supports up to 85-inch TVs on good models, and leaves no marks.
Do no-stud drywall mounts count as no drilling?
No — they still need small nail or pin holes. They are lighter-duty than a stud mount and only suit smaller, lighter TVs.

Do You Need Studs to Mount a TV? When Drywall Alone Is Safe

Usually yes. Drywall alone holds a TV up to about 32 inches and 30 pounds on a fixed mount with four rated toggles. Bigger TVs and full-motion arms need a stud — or masonry.
